Review examines what works, and what needs more study, in nerve injury rehabilitation

Assistant Professor Sarah Smith, MD, FAAPMR; Kirsten Schlosser, MD, who completed her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency in June 2026; and Acting Assistant Professor Ranee Munaim, MS, OTR/L, CHT, co-authored a Muscle & Nerve review of electrical modalities used in peripheral nerve rehabilitation. 

The article found that while some approaches show promise for pain management and motor relearning, stronger clinical evidence is needed to support routine use of electrical stimulation following peripheral nerve injury. Co-authors included colleagues from the UW Medicine Division of Plastic Surgery.
