Wiechman honored with Division 22’s Lifetime Practice Award

Shelley Wiechman, PhD, ABPP
Shelley Wiechman, PhD, ABPP, Professor, has received the Lifetime Practice Excellence Award from Division 22 of the American Psychological Association. Recognized for her transformative work in burn injury rehabilitation psychology, Dr. Wiechman's impact extends globally, profoundly influencing patient care and professional standards. The award will be presented on February 23 at the 2024 Rehabilitation Psychology Conference

As the Director of Psychological Services at the UW Burn Center, Dr. Wiechman has been instrumental in providing comprehensive psychological care to burn patients of all ages, from children to adults. Her collaboration with rehabilitation, surgery, and pediatric teams has significantly enhanced patient outcomes, demonstrating her commitment to improving healthcare delivery.

Beyond patient care, Dr. Wiechman is dedicated to supporting the well-being of healthcare providers. Through her involvement in initiatives like the UW Medicine Health and Wellness committee and the Resiliency Committee, she champions mental health support for colleagues, fostering a healthier workforce.

Dr. Wiechman's role as a mentor and educator is equally commendable. Her exemplary supervision of rehabilitation psychology residents has earned her the Excellence in Teaching and Supervision Award five times, more than any other faculty in our program. 

Internationally sought after for her expertise, Dr. Wiechman has played pivotal roles in organizations like the American Burn Association (ABA), advancing clinical practice guidelines and mental health support for burn survivors. Notably, she led the task force that established standardized clinical guidelines for managing acute burn pain, published in 2020, and continues to spearhead efforts in developing evidence-based mental health screening protocols for burn centers worldwide.

With 75 peer-reviewed publications and 14 book chapters, Dr. Wiechman's scholarly contributions have pushed the boundaries of knowledge in the field. Her accolades, including the prestigious Curtis P. Artz Distinguished Service Award from the ABA, underscore her unwavering dedication and significant contributions to burn injury rehabilitation psychology.

In summary, Dr. Shelley Wiechman's remarkable achievements exemplify a lifetime of dedication, innovation, and excellence that have profoundly improved care for burn patients.
