UW Rehabilitation Medicine volunteers train for the para ice hockey season

Students, faculty, and community volunteers gathered September 26 at the Kraken Community Iceplex for the Seattle Adaptive Sports para ice hockey volunteer orientation, preparing for the 2026-27 season.
The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was well represented, with volunteers including medical students, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and prosthetics and orthotics students, as well as faculty physicians. Many participants were new to the program.
During the orientation, volunteers learned about program guidelines, how practices are organized, adaptive equipment used in para ice hockey, and ways to support athletes on and off the ice. Participants also toured the facilities and had the opportunity to try the sport themselves.
Department volunteers support youth and adult athletes throughout the season at practices and games, helping create opportunities for recreation, skill development, and competition through adaptive sports.
