Alissa Smith, a PhD in Rehabilitation Studies student, has received the Dennis Lang award from the University of Washington Disability Studies Program. The Dennis Lang Award is a merit-based monetary award for undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington who demonstrate promise in the field of Disability Studies.
"In a time where equity and empowerment for people with marginalized identities is especially being targeted, Alissa’s positionality, critical work at UW, and vision for her future speak to the growth, discovery, and impact she has had as a campus and healthcare leader in Disability Studies, and her impact to come in our community," says Associate Professor Heather Feldner, PhD. Her vision for the future reflects growth, discovery, and the meaningful impact she will continue to have in our community.
The award goes to students who embody Dennis' spirited commitment to and academic excellence in the field of Disability Studies. Award amounts range from $200 to $500, depending upon the fund's performance and the number of individuals selected to receive the award.
Mia Hoffman, in the Mechanical Engineering PhD program, was also a Dennis Lang recipient.
