Second-year MPO students receive grants at the NWAAOP meeting
The Northwest Chapter Meeting of the American Academy of O&P (NWAAOP) meeting held in Seattle from April 3-5, 2025, was attended by Master of Prosthetics & Orthotics (MPO) faculty Susan Kapp, Bryan Roehr, Sue Spaulding, and Stefania Fatone, as well as second- and first-year students. Val Goetz, Mya Akrie, and Shannon Coyle, all second-year students, received $1000 each as part of the Bernard Simon Scholarships from the NWAAOP Board.
Second-year students gave presentations based on the critically appraised topics they completed in Assistant Professor Cody McDonald’s Evidence-Based Practice course: Shannon Coyle presented “The effect of night-time orthosis use on dorsiflexion range of motion in children with lower limb paresis.”
- Liz Morse presented “Plantarflexion stops vs plantarflexion resistance: effects on gait of post-stroke patients.”
- Sam Teixeira presented “Comparison of caregiver and patient perceptions of health-related quality of life in early-onset scoliosis.”
- Katie Bieler presented “The difference between carbon and hinged AFOs in pediatric patients with cerebral palsy.”
- Riley Browning presented “Comparison of cranial helmet therapy and repositioning therapy for infants with plagiocephaly and/or brachycephaly.” Below, find photos of the students giving their presentations.
Meanwhile, Brendan McGonigle, a second-year MPO student, was nominated to be secretary of the NWAAOP Board for the coming year. Brendan will graduate in June and begin a residency at Hanger Clinic in Silverdale, Washington.
