Meet our sports and spine doctors: Sean Matsuwaka, MD

What inspired you to specialize in sports and spine medicine?
What inspired me to do sports and spine medicine started during medical school, when I worked with physiatrists specializing in sports medicine. I saw how they helped to rehabilitate and guide patients back from injury while focusing on their function. I really enjoyed seeing patients get better and what we could do for them as physicians.
Why did you choose to join UW Medicine?
I chose to join UW Medicine because of the great experience I had during my residency training here. All of the doctors seemed very well trained, evidence-based, and there was great camaraderie among the entire medical team.
What is your favorite part of working with patients in this field?
My favorite part of working with patients in this field is seeing them improve and how grateful they are as they get better and are able to return to their jobs, sports, and leisurely activities.
What's one easy tip for spine/joint health you wish everyone would follow?
A tip for spine/joint health that I recommend is that all patients should do their best to stay active. Any type of exercise that they can enjoy and do consistently is good. Our motto in sports medicine is that exercise is medicine.
When you are not in the clinic, what do you enjoy doing?
When I'm not in clinic I enjoy running, working out, stand up paddleboarding, being outdoors, eating good food, and traveling.
