Meet our sports and spine doctors: Mark Harrast, MD

What inspired you to specialize in sports and spine medicine?
I entered our field of PM&R because I inherently see the value in the unique functional and team-based approach to patient care that physiatrists take. I have been inspired in sports medicine, and more specifically, running and endurance sports medicine, because it is so gratifying to marry my vocational interests with my avocational pursuits.
Why did you choose to join UW Medicine?
Working in an academic medical center within such a strong rehabilitation medicine department was my goal when I entered our field as a resident. I've clearly found the right fit as I've grown my career here for more than 25 years! It's so inspiring to work alongside and train the physiatrists of the future with our wonderful residents and fellows! Ultimately they keep me here and keep me so excited to call myself a member of our division and department.
What is your favorite part of working with patients in this field?
Every patient is very goal-directed and wants to regain some form of function or activity, so they take a very active role in their care. Having such active and shared involvement in clinical decision-making and patient care in general is exceedingly fulfilling and how I like to practice medicine.
When you are not in the clinic, what do you enjoy doing?
Being outdoors! Running, particularly trail running, hiking with my family, and skiing are my passions.
In these photos, Dr. Harrast shows his love of exploring the mountains, whether through trail running or while skiing with his daughter.
