Meet our sports and spine doctors: Brian Liem, MD, RMSK, CAQ Sports Med

What inspired you to specialize in sports and spine medicine?
I am a physiatrist first and foremost. The sports and spine subspecialty not only embodies the Physiatry emphasis on function but also provides additional focus on the musculoskeletal system and biomechanics.
Why did you choose to join UW Medicine?
I joined UW Medicine because of its mission to serve the community's health needs regardless of social status, religion, and ethnic background. As a premier academic center it advances medical education and research, key tenets of healthcare.
What is your favorite part of working with patients in this field?
To see the joy in someone's smile when they describe their ability to return to a treasured activity, whether that be returning to competitive sport, or simply chasing their grandkids at the park.
What is one easy tip for spine/joint health you wish everyone would follow?
Always stay active but recognize when your body is talking to you.
When you are not in the clinic, what do you enjoy doing?
Spending time with family, traveling, video games, trading.
