Currently, no guidelines exist to test the mechanical strength of prosthetic sockets. To address this, the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association established the Socket Guidance Workgroup, which consists of multidisciplinary experts from various countries and backgrounds. Stefania Fatone, PhD, BPO(Hons), Professor and Associate Chair, is a member of the workgroup. They have now published a whitepaper on the gaps they have discovered and recommendations to correct them. The paper, titled “Mechanical testing of transtibial prosthetic sockets: A discussion paper from the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association Socket Guidance Workgroup,” was published in Prosthetics and Orthotics International.
