Bringing back REHAB 300-Intro to OT elective course for undergrads
It had been a decade since the Division of Occupational Therapy taught REHAB 300 - Introduction to Occupational Therapy to undergraduate students at UW Seattle. Program Director Tracy Jirikowic thought, "It was just the right time," to bring back an elective course that introduced this phenomenal health care field to undergrads.
The new goal was to reach a wider audience by making the course 100% online to be accessible to UW Tri-Campus students. Nationally, the number of applicants applying to OT academic programs has seen a sharp decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. By teaching an elective course to undergraduate students who are still trying to figure out what career path they want to pursue, the Division hoped to ignite more interest in this field.
With 22 students representing UW Seattle and UW Bothell, the course was a resounding success! The students came from a diverse range of majors, including: education, social welfare, psychology, nutrition, global health, biology, and data visualization. A number of the students are considering pursuing occupational therapy in the future.
