Message from the Chair

Welcome to the University of Washington Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Established in 1957, this department is home to the world’s leading rehabilitation research, clinical care, and education. We offer an unparalleled breadth of programs, from our expansive research and clinical care services to our clinical training and our academic degree programs. We are a national leader in rehabilitation medicine and a leader within UW, where we are consistently the highest nationally ranked department within the UW School of Medicine. Our faculty is internationally known for leadership in research, clinical care, and education in a wide range of rehabilitation disciplines.

We reflect our core values of Integrity, Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact in everything that we do, and I am proud to serve as the department chair. Our rehabilitation community improves the lives of thousands of patients every single day, and I am tremendously inspired and motivated by our faculty and staffs' dedication to our vision of a world where all people can fully participate and thrive.

My vision for the next 5-10 years is to integrate our clinical, teaching and research missions into a learning health system. This will allow us to use what we learn through our research to improve clinical care and education. Our team is committed to continuous quality improvement, and this helps us give our patients higher quality, safer and more efficient care. We are committed to integrating the most advanced and evidence-based rehabilitation approaches to help our patients improve their quality of life and function.

Achieving our mission requires tremendous community support and partnership, and I want to thank all our community partners – each one helps us improve the lives of our patients. We could not do our work without grant funding and philanthropic gifts, and together, we achieve and advance the highest quality rehabilitation care, training, and research.
