Laura Johnstone, MPT, PhD

Dr. Johnstone is an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the associate director of the Division of Physical Therapy. Before transitioning to an academic career, she practiced acute physical therapy at the University of Washington Medical Center and orthopedic physical therapy at Edmonds Orthopedic Therapy.

She is an APTA certified clinical instructor and has completed an Inter-professional Fellowship in Medical Education. Part of her PhD work involved studying curricular inter-professional outcomes and leadership in rehabilitation academics. She serves as a FunFitness Clinical Director for Special Olympics and enjoys bringing physical therapy students to these health promotion events.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Johnstone has been an instructor in the UW Doctor of Physical Therapy program since 2009 and has instructed in multiple courses in the curriculum. Currently, she teaches anatomy and therapeutic exercise to students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Occupational Therapy, and Master of Prosthetics & Orthotics academic programs. She has an interest in inclusive teaching practices, improving curricular efficiency, and creating supportive educational environments for students.
