Laura Johnstone, MPT, PhD

Dr. Johnstone is an associate teaching professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and the interim director of the Division of Physical Therapy. Before transitioning to an academic career, she practiced acute physical therapy at the University of Washington Medical Center and orthopedic physical therapy at Edmonds Orthopedic Therapy.

She is an APTA-certified clinical instructor and completed an Inter-professional Fellowship in Medical Education. Her PhD work focused on curricular inter-professional outcomes and leadership in rehabilitation academics.

Dr. Johnstone currently serves as an item writer for the National Physical Therapy Board Examination (NPTE), is a member of the APTA-WA Education Committee, and serves on the School of Medicine Academic Affairs Committee.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Johnstone has been an instructor in the UW Doctor of Physical Therapy program since 2009 and has instructed in multiple courses in the curriculum. Currently, she teaches anatomy and therapeutic exercise to students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Occupational Therapy, and Master of Prosthetics & Orthotics academic programs. She has an interest in inclusive teaching practices, improving curricular efficiency, and creating supportive educational environments for students.
