Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)
Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition and Other Major Program Expenses

A reasonable estimate of total expenses for the duration of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program (11 consecutive quarters, or 33 months) for a single person living in Seattle (Washington resident) is:

  • $75,000 tuition (2015-2016 resident tuition = $6,464/quarter)
  • $3,600 fees
  • $33,000 housing (one bedroom apartment)
  • $27,000 food and entertainment
  • $2,000 books/copies
  • $2,000 health insurance
  • $4,000 internship expenses (1 out-of-town)
  • $1,000 transportation (student U-Pass)
  • $390 immunization/insurance

Tuition costs for non-residents should be adjusted to $12,093 per quarter, and both resident and non-resident tuition can be expected to increase 5%-10% each fall. Housing and food costs may be reduced by choosing shared or University housing options. Contact Housing and Food Services (206.543.4059) or Off-Campus Housing Affairs for more details.

It is recommended that students obtain personal health insurance while enrolled via the Affordable Care Act. Visit the following website to learn more http://www.washington.edu/ship/affordable-care/.

It is also helpful if the selected insurance covers immunizations since PT students must participate in the Health Sciences Immunization Program (HSIP). Find more details on required injections/procedures (http://depts.washington.edu/chsweb/hsi), most of which are paid by the student.

Liability insurance is provided by the Program. The University of Washington is self-insured and all enrolled students are covered for professional liabilities arising from negligent acts and omissions committed in the course and scope of their university duties.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Information on financial assistance and scholarships may be obtained from the University of Washington Office of Financial Aid (206-543-6101). Deadlines for financial aid applications are:

  • February 28 - Financial Aid
  • May 30 - Childcare Assistance
  • January-April - Private Scholarships

Students should apply for financial aid as soon as possible, and prior to potential admission to the program. Most students arrange for student loans if they need financial assistance, as there is little time available for employment while enrolled in the program.

Residents of Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming may wish to investigate a special tuition supplement available through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Professional Student Exchange Program. This program may provide funds for certified students to compensate for most of the difference between resident and non-resident tuition. Contact (303-541-0214) for further details, or visit the WICHE website.

Information on the University of Washington's Child Care Assistance program for students may be obtained by calling 206-543-1041 or visiting their website.

Physical Therapy Fellowship

The Division of Physical Therapy awards a McGee Fellowship of $5,000 each year for all three years of the program, to one incoming Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student. The Fellowship is awarded based on both merit and financial need. Interested applicants should complete the application form and return it to the address on the form's cover letter. The Fellowship recipient will be selected and notified by the end of February.
