UW Medicine - Harborview Medical Center Inpatient Trauma Rehabilitation, along with the Neurological Vocational Services Unit (NVSU) has been recognized for exceptional commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centered services, earning a Three-Year Accreditation from CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Notably, the CARF accreditation report offers no recommendations for improvement, a standard reached by only three percent of accredited facilities.

This recognition is a testament to the unit’s unwavering commitment to not only meet but substantially conform to rigorous standards, providing high-quality care to those in need, especially underserved populations.

A Culture of Excellence and Compassion

The CARF report notes that at the heart of the center's philosophy is a profound passion for rehabilitation, creating an environment filled with hope, respect, and safety for patients, their families, and staff. The report remarks that a "passion for rehabilitation is palpable throughout the organization," highlighting the deep commitment of the team to their mission. This ethos is further demonstrated by the center's comprehensive approach to healthcare, serving as a critical component within the broader UW Medicine system, known for its exceptional healthcare services across the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho region.

Remarkable Achievements During Challenging Times

According to the CARF report, one of the most notable strengths of the inpatient trauma rehabilitation program is its adept response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing unprecedented challenges, the program successfully adapted, ensuring the safety and continued care of its patients, even as occupancy surged by more than 100 additional patients per year. This resilience and flexibility speak volumes about the dedication of the center's leadership and staff.

Innovative Approaches to Rehabilitation

The center is not only recognized for its quality of care but also for its innovative use of assistive technology, offering a range of low and high-tech solutions to meet the diverse needs of its patients. This creative approach is encapsulated in the use of "tech boxes," designed to support patients effectively. Furthermore, the center is optimally positioned for a specialized spinal cord injury program, thanks to its medical and therapy leadership, volume of patients, and comprehensive resources.

Community and Staff: The Pillars of Success

The long-term commitment of the center's staff and leadership to its mission and the field of rehabilitation is commendable. Despite staffing challenges, the center has excelled in managing shortages, retention, and recruitment, ensuring the continuity of high-quality care. This commitment is echoed by the families, referral sources, and payer sources, who have consistently applauded the center for its dedication and the compassion demonstrated by its staff.

Deborah Crane, MD, MPH, is the medical director of Inpatient Rehabilitation at Harborview Medical Center. She echoes the words of the CARF report, saying, “I would like to express my appreciation for all of the staff whose commitment and dedication make this unit an exceptional place to work and serve our patients. In particular, I would like to recognize Kristin Kaupang, MS, PT, who managed the CARF accreditation process for her hard work and dedication on this complicated project.”

Empowering Through Vocational Services

The NVSU stands out for its life-changing services, helping individuals obtain and maintain employment through comprehensive training, placement, and support. The success stories of those served by NVSU are a powerful testament to the impact of these services, enabling individuals to achieve their employment goals and attain long-term job stability.

A Forward-Thinking Approach to Diversity and Inclusion

UW Medicine - Harborview Medical Center Inpatient Trauma Rehabilitation is also recognized for its focus on cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion. The center's efforts to address implicit racial bias and microaggressions, along with its EthnoMed website, serve as vital resources for integrating cultural information into clinical practice, reflecting the organization's commitment to serving diverse populations with the utmost respect and understanding.

A Bright Future Ahead

With this accreditation and the numerous strengths highlighted by CARF, UW Medicine - Harborview Medical Center Inpatient Trauma Rehabilitation is poised for continued success. The center's proactive management of bed capacity, particularly through its Skilled Nursing Center Transition of Care, exemplifies its innovative approach to meeting the needs of its patients comprehensively.
