Research staff profile: Tyler Barrett

Tyler Barrett

Introducing Tyler Barrett, a second-year PhD student and research assistant with Dr. Mark Jensen's lab. Tyler’s interests include psychosocial interventions for chronic pain, gerontology, and research on scope of practice.

What research projects do you work on currently?

I work on research studies examining the effects of music on chronic pain and clinical hypnosis, and on a study examining who benefits most from psychological treatments for chronic pain in order to match people with the type of psychological treatment for pain that would work best for them.

What attracted you to the field of research?

Clinical rehabilitation research is most appealing to me in its ability to simultaneously effect change on a large scale while potentially benefiting study participants in the process.

Why did you decide to work in the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine?

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is comprised of collaborative and interdisciplinary researchers and staff that care about asking and addressing some of the most challenging questions in medicine.

What aspect of your job do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy working with participants as a study clinician and learning from my participants as much as I teach. On projects in which I'm involved with analysis, I enjoy interpreting data, and may be one of the few people who actually enjoys manuscript writing.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I have two children under the age of 4, so there is no relaxation...but lots of fun. We enjoy spending time at the public library, community center, and outdoor parks and trails.
