Mark A. Harrast, MD, is a sports medicine physician and medical director of the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium. Dr. Harrast graduated with honors from the University of Chicago and obtained his medical degree from Northwestern University. He completed his residency at the University of Washington, where he was Chief Resident his final year. His clinical expertise is diagnosing and treating sports-related injuries and illnesses in endurance athletes, runners and triathletes. He also has a focus on injury prevention and wellness. He enjoys treating athletes and active people throughout the age spectrum. 

Dr. Harrast works closely with many rehabilitation professionals, including physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, massage therapists and nutritionists to individualize the treatment plan of care for each of his patients, depending on the significance and severity of the injury or illness. It's important to him that his patients are active participants in their healthcare in order to work together as a team to restore and maximize function lost through injury or illness.

Teaching Interests

Dr Harrast is the founder and program director of the PM&R Sports Medicine Fellowship. He has been active in Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education since he joined the faculty of UW in 2001. One of his primary professional passions is teaching and mentoring residents and fellows. In 2024, Dr Harrast was appointed Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.
