Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)
Visting Student Clerkship Opportunities

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers Rehab 687 to fourth year visiting medical students interested in Rehabilitation Medicine. This is a four-week clerkship that is available in conjunction with the UW elective block schedule. No exceptions are made to this calendar. Interested students generally will be placed at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC). If you are interested in another hospital within the Seattle area affiliated with the University of Washington, please specify on your application form and we will let you know if we can accommodate your special request.

It is important to note that a 4-week minimum chronic disease and disability experience is a graduation requirement for University of Washington medical students. Therefore, due to our primary commitment to our students, limited space is available for visiting students and this requires us to make the basis of our selection for visiting students more competitive.

Please be aware that a visiting student rotation is not a requirement in order to apply to our residency program and most of our residents did not participate in a visiting student clerkship with us. If you are interested in applying for a resident position with our program, we fully encourage you to do so and please do not be concerned if we are unable to accommodate you in a visiting student clerkship, as it has no effect on your residency application.

Applying for the Visiting Medical Student

The first step in applying is to submit your Board Scores, a current CV and a personal statement explaining your interest in doing a clerkship with us. These items should be emailed to Phaedra Allen, the clerkship coordinator. Please also refer to the UW Visiting Student Program Clinical Clerkship Schedule and indicate the four-week period you would like to apply for. It is helpful if alternate dates are also listed. Once you have met the departmental requirements and it has been determined that there is a space available, you will be directed to the UW Academic Affairs Office to complete the university requirements. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

The University of Washington School of Medicine will be using the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS), to receive visiting student application for the 2009-2010 academic year. Applications may be submitted through VSAS starting on April 1, 2009. To apply to our school, please complete and send us a VSAS application for your preferred electives and dates. For more information on VSAS, please visit www.aamc.org/vsas or contact VSAS at vsas@aamc.org or (202) 478-9878. Only students from LCME accredited schools can apply through VSAS. Canadian students, D.O. students, and 2009/2010 applicants may apply using our standard application form. Please request an application form from the Visiting Student Program Coordinator at visitstu@u.washington.edu.
