Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)
Visiting Student Clerkship Opportunities

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers Rehab 687 to fourth year visiting medical students interested in Rehabilitation Medicine. This is a four-week clerkship that is available in conjunction with the UW School of Medicine clinical schedule. No exceptions are made to this calendar. We accept visiting students for each of the following four 4-week rotation blocks:
    7/24/17 - 8/18/17
    8/21/17 - 9/15/17
    9/25/17 - 10/20/17
    10/23/17 - 11/17/17

This course is intended for those interested in exploring a career in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Sites are within the University system including the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center and the Seattle VA Spinal Cord Injury Service. The experience is primarily inpatient rehabilitation with additional educational opportunities in outpatient, electrodiagnostic, and consultation settings. Students attend PM&R resident lectures during the clerkship experience.

Please be aware that a visiting student rotation is not a requirement in order to apply to our residency program and most of our residents did not participate in a visiting student clerkship with us. If you are interested in applying for a resident position with our program, we fully encourage you to do so and please do not be concerned if we are unable to accommodate you in a visiting student clerkship, as it has no effect on your residency application.

Applying for the Visiting Medical Student

Step One: Review the application guidelines.

Step Two: Apply through VSAS.

The UW School of Medicine Visiting Student Clinical Elective Program uses VSAS, the Visiting Student Application Service, to receive visiting student applications. Applications may be submitted starting in March. The elective will not appear in VSAS until March 1. For more information on VSAS, please contact their help desk at vsas@aamc.org.

Only students from LCME and COCA accredited schools can apply through VSAS. Canadian students and other students not from an LCME or COCA accredited school may apply using the standard Visiting Student application form. To request an application form, or if you have questions, please contact the Visiting Student Program Coordinator at visitstu@uw.edu.

Step Three: Send your supporting documents.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • COMLEX or USMLE Scores
  • A statement of interest outlining your interest in this clerkship opportunity, what you would like to accomplish while you are here, and your future aspiration in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • A copy of the clerkship date(s) that you applied for.

Your application will be evaluated on the strength of the first three items, not the order in which applications are received. These items should be emailed to Teresa Jewell, the clerkship coordinator. Please also refer to the UW School of Medicine Clinical Schedule and indicate in your email the four-week block you would like to apply for. If multiple rotation dates will work, please list them in order of preference. We can only accept Visiting Students for the 4-week rotation blocks listed above.

Once we receive your approved VSAS application from the UW Visiting Student Office, a department committee will determine whether you meet the departmental requirements, and if space is available, we will approve your rotation in VSAS and you will be notified. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

A note regarding rotations at the VA SCI site: Students who are interested in rotating at the VA will need to get fingerprinted at a VA within the month before their rotation.
