Advanced Training on Outcomes in Rehabilitation Research (UW-ATORR) Post-Doctoral Fellowship:
Trainee Goals and Expectations

UW-ATORR Trainee Goals:

  • Increase confidence and skills in multiple areas of outcomes measurement in rehabilitation, including the application of modern psychometric approaches such as Item Response Theory, designing outcomes measures for clinical trials or observational studies, conducting psychometric analyses, interpreting results and using them to improve instruments or tests, justifying selection of outcomes measures in grant applications and/or manuscripts for publication, and disseminating findings.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge and experience with selecting, evaluating, or developing outcomes measurement in an area of Rehabilitation Science of interest to the trainee (e.g., PROs, performance-based assessment, sleep, imaging, sensors, qualitative methodology to examine and document content validity, momentary ecological assessment)
  • Gain experience with manuscript writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Increase confidence and skills in oral presentations, particularly with respect to presenting complex or technical topics, such as IRT in ways that are accessible to different and scientific writing
  • Increase grant writing skills, especially sections related to instrument selection, justification, and description of psychometric properties of outcomes measures or methods for developing new outcomes measures
  • Emerge from training with a refined rehabilitation research agenda, manuscripts submitted for publication, and well positioned to obtain a rehabilitation research position

Expectations for UW-ATORR Trainees:

  • Complete the UW-ATORR Common Core Curriculum
  • Complete an Individualized Didactics Curriculum (if applicable)
  • Submit 2 manuscripts per year for publication
  • Under the supervision of an experienced research mentor, design and complete one or more research studies with a focus on outcomes measurement in the trainees’ topic of interest
  • Demonstrate improved skills in presenting findings from research
  • Demonstrate improved skills in writing articles or chapters for publication
  • Demonstrate improved skills in grant writing
