Why did you choose rehabilitation science at the UW?

I chose the Rehabilitation Science program at the UW because I hoped to join a dynamic rehabilitation program that was close to my home. I have been able to stay close to my family in Bellingham while in graduate school and this was the most important consideration for me.

Why did you choose interdisciplinary education?

My profession, rehabilitation counseling, is grounded in interdisciplinary principles and diversity. Learning with people from diverse disciplines brings collective expertise and knowledge to rehabilitation services to the advantage of both providers of care and consumers with disabilities.

What are your research interests/working on?

I am interested in rehabilitation of veterans especially related to recovery from psychological trauma. I have developed a survey questionnaire for veteran students and hope to gain insights about the experiences of veteran university students after separation from active duty service.

What is your professional background?

I earned my MA in Rehabilitation Counseling from Western Washington University. I have worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor at the VA helping veterans with disabilities to gain additional training and/or education leading to suitable employment. What has been your greatest struggle?

Returning to school as a non-traditional student (older) has been both a joy and a challenge. It has been fulfilling to push myself in new endeavors at this time in my life. The greatest challenge for me has been staying awake past 10 P.M. to finish all required and desired readings!

What are your favorite things about the UW/Seattle?

I love to study in the Suzzallo Library and have enjoyed spending time on the “upper campus” as well as in the Health Sciences complex. The campus and U. District provide great opportunities for walking and I like to explore the neighborhood coffee houses and bookstores for fun.
